UK NewsGuru Purnima and the Sponsored WalkIt was a weekday, Thursday 2nd August, and ordinary by any means except that it was Guru Purnima and the celebrations were graced by Br Shubamrita Chaitanya. The organisers were quite dumbfounded by the turnout, over 150, and all crammed tight in the Wimbledon community centre. Quite a number of newcomers were present. Br Shubamrita talked about the ideal Guru-disciple relationship and how we could use the upcoming visit as a means to really serve Amma, by performing seva to the best of our abilities. It was so nice to see devotees travelling all the way from Gloucestershire, Oxford and other places to be there. Br Shubamrita also transformed the third sponsored walk in Richmond Park by walking the walk himself. Not put out by the blazing sun nor the prospect of a 5 km walk, he lead the group of about 50 in this popular annual event. The highlight of the long day was the lottery prizes (blessed by Amma) for everyone who had taken part in the walk. The youth took Br. Shubamrita's presence as an opportunity to discuss the ideas they had developed for how the UK Youth should play its role in the European Youth Movement, AYUDH Europe which Amma has officially recognised. As they sat in a group around Br.Shubamrita, he stressed the importance of regularity, working together. It was agreed that ecological and environmental activities were required along with networking, community service, and promoting Amma. The advice and direction given led to a series of projects and arranging the first UK Youth Gathering. The UK Youth movement was set in motion. This was his third visit to the city and coincided with the start of the annual Edinburgh Festival. Afterwards we had a brief opportunity to see the city and the street festivities. Br Shubamrita commented how wonderful Edinburgh and Scotland are and agreed to visit again during the summer of 2008. |
