May Retreat 2007
- Report

4 - 6 May

The Wiltshire fields shimmered in the haze of a setting sun, as the M4 traffic slipped behind and the winding roads that took its place led me to Cleeve House - an old and somewhat imposing building with huge heavy doors and wonderfully high vaulted ceilings. With breathtaking views over the surrounding fields, and trees swaying in a gentle breeze; I took advantage of the remaining light to pitch tent and ground myself before joining the group.

Bhajans were in full swing as I entered the house, and to slip into the 'temple' room and shut my eyes was to be with Amma herself; Mike leading on the harmonium, various people with cymbals and drums; all singing to the Divine with one voice. Supper followed shortly after, as always the food was delicious; so fresh and full of love and goodness.

A very diligent bell ringer woke up the early morning stragglers at about 6am in time for archana the next morning. It had been a cold night, and not many of the campers had enjoyed a full night's sleep so it was a tough call to answer! But the bell persisted and after a warming mug of tea, I am so glad I did! It's a wonderful way to start the day.

In the morning we enjoyed an outdoors eco-meditation led by Bharati; and in the afternoon four devotees shared their personal experience of being with Amma, from her first visit to Europe to being with her at the ashram in India . In the evening we watched a wonderful film showing footage rarely seen. The time in between was spent relaxing, laughing, reflecting, connecting.

By Sunday everyone was well and truly 'in the groove' of the retreat! We went on a wonderful group walk, expertly led by Dinesh. Somehow we all managed to make it back after meandering through fields, along the Kennet & Avon canal and then through a church graveyard before coming full circle.

And in the afternoon we all thoroughly enjoyed a 'Laughter Yoga' workshop, facilitated by Justin. I have to confess, I don't think I was the only one who was more than a little dubious about this activity . but believe me, it works! Words won't do it justice - look at the photos. When we were all lying in a circle we were supposed to be relaxing and drawing the session to an end, and yet some of us were still having fits of giggles. They say laughter beats the gym for a calorie burn out.

Needless to say, Amma was with us always. Her presence was everywhere, through the photos, the conversations, the memories, the bhajans and yes, the laughter. The next retreat at Cleeve House is in January 2008, watch this space for dates to be confirmed in September! -- Aparna
